The Special Police Reserve were organised uilder authority
of the Special Police Reserve Ordinance No. 27 of 1914. Enlistment
commenced in February 1915; and the number of members stands at
present at 540.

The Corps consists of British subjects only. There is a
Deputy Superintendent and an Assistant Superintendent who have con-
trol over all the units. The other officers are members of the
several units. There are four companies. No. 1 Europeans and
Indians. No. 2 Portuguese. No. 3 & 4 Chinese. There is a maxim
gun section, a motor bicycle section and a mounted section composed of various races, A band composed of Portuguese, and an Ambulance Corps composed of Chinese. Several ex-members of the Regular Police Force are staff inspectors whose duties are to assist in seeing
that the police patrol duties are properly carried out and who
visit the patrols when out on duty.

The police duties consist in patrols on land and in
launches in the Harbour. The Reserve men do three hours patrol at
a time, on land they go out in pairs and do duty between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 9 p.m. and midnight. The various companies take it in turns to provide the patrols. Each company is treated alike, and no difference is made regarding race. On an average each man does one patrol every 5 days. Recruits have at least two drills a week, and passed men one a week. There is also a combined route march about once a month. Arrangements have also been made by a system of a few telephone messages and callers to summon all men to their respective Police Stations on an emergency, when they all have to turn up in uniform with rifles and ammunition.

The equipment consists of summer and winter uniform.
Rifles are supplied. Service rifles and Martini carbines to No. and No. 2 companies and Winchester rifles to the Chinese companies. All men go through a musketry course, and musketry competitions are held. Rifles are periodically returned to store for examination, cleaning and repairs. When on patrol duty the em carry, belts,
revolvers and truncheons.
